Kitchen Thyme: Thank you for being part of our Kitchen Thyme Blogger Spotlight Series! Tell us where you’re from and how you got into blogging?
Jacqueline: I grew up in the prairies, however I left in my early 20’s to travel. And now reside in beautiful British Columbia with my best friend and life partner Jason and our fur babies. I have always had an Entrepreneurial Spirit. I have run several small businesses over the years. I love to cook and knew I wanted to run a blog as a business. And so I have been at that for the past few years, while running my other business.
KT: How did you come up with the name of your blog?
Jacqueline: Funny story, most of my life, people have said I am a true Canadian. In more ways than just one. I was born on Canada Day, the day our whole Country celebrates our Confederation! So my birthday is always a gathering of family and friends celebrating this special day and mine. I love this Country, because it is so diverse yet there is tolerance and a friendliness like no other place. People from all over the World live here and the food culture is out of this World. I chose the name Canadian Cooking Adventures, to share my pride in all of this. We all have something to offer and our food is just a taste of that.
KT: How long have you been blogging?
Jacqueline: I started blogging in 2017, as with any blogger who has seen any success will tell you, it has not been easy, but rather very hard. That being said, I am the type of person that puts a lot of work into something I love.
KT: Are you a part-time or full-time blogger?
Jacqueline: I work full-time at blogging however, do not make that income yet. I also have a full-time job outside of blogging that pays most of my bills.
KT: How many recipes do you publish each week?
Jacqueline: 3 recipes per week
KT: After you publish a recipe on your blog, walk us through the steps you take to get more eyes on that recipe. What sites do you submit your recipe to? Do you use a spreadsheet to keep track of where you share your recipes?
Jacqueline: Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and a few recipe sharing threads on facebook and recipe sharing sites.
KT: What does a typical week look like for you? Do you create recipes and blog posts on certain days of the week?
Jacqueline: I do it whenever I have the extra time. I’m a workaholic in many ways. When I’m not working at my day job, I am working on my blog and caring for my family household.
KT: Do you have a good blog/life balance? Do you unplug at night or on the weekends?
Jacqueline: I try to, however that is not always easy when there is so many hats to wear as a blogger.
KT: How much time do you spend on Social Media each day? Do you use any schedulers for Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram? Do you have a Virtual Assistant to help you?
Jacqueline: I do not use a scheduler, I have looked into a few. However, right now I do it manually. I spend a lot of time on social media, I can’t really provide a number. However, I always say, I do not spend time on it to play around. I am always working on growing my blog and business!
KT: What social media networks/websites give you the most traffic to your blog?
Jacqueline: Google then Pinterest
KT: What AD networks do you have on your blog?
KT: What are the main sources of income from your blog? Sponsored Posts? Advertisements? Affiliate Links?
KT: Do you have a long relationship with any particular Brands?
Jacqueline: Not yet, but I am in talks with a few. Fingers crossed, because I love them both. And I also have a few in mind that I want to reach out too.
KT: Do you enjoy going to Blogging Conferences? If so, which ones do you recommend for Food Bloggers?
Jacqueline: I have not had the opportunity to do this yet.
KT: Where do you find inspiration to create new recipes?
Jacqueline: I love to recreate recipes that I have tried in the restaurants! I also love to create new recipes and or merge popular ones with new ingredients. Then other times I will find inspiration online or in my massive cookbook collection.
KT: What are your top 3 favorite recipes on your blog?
Jacqueline: Well, they are not my most popular recipes, I could add those. However, you asked what my top favorites are 🙂 So that means if I had to live off these top 3 for the year, I would be happy!
KT: Do you have great lighting in your house for photos or do you need to use artificial lighting or filters?
Jacqueline: It depends on the time of year. Sometimes it is dark and gloomy and I will use artifial lamps and filters. When it’s sunny out, I will try to use that light more.
KT: What advice would you give to new food bloggers when it comes to taking photos of food?
Jacqueline: Practice makes perfect.
KT: Do you have a favorite cookbook?
Jacqueline: I do not. It’s like asking me do I have a favorite food, I do not. I love many books and many types of cuisines.
KT: If you could cook with a famous chef or celebrity cook, who would it be and why?
Jacqueline: Hands down, Guy Fieri! He is just so down to earth and funny. I think we would get along well. If I can choose one more though, I would choose my Canadian gal Chef Lynn Crawford. She is also very down to earth and cool and I am sure we would get along well too.
KT: You are constantly working with food. What are a few ingredients you cannot live without?
Jacqueline: Salt, Oyster Sauce, Butter, Olive Oil, Fresh Vegetables, Chicken, Avocados, I could go on forever but I’ll stop here.
KT: Do you have any advice for someone starting a food blog?
Jacqueline: I wish I could give advice, maybe I will have some 5 years down the road. What I do know is that every blogger’s journey is different. You have to find what works for you and be prepared to put a lot of time and effort into it. As with any business, it takes that and more to succeed.
KT: Jacqueline, thank you so much for joining us at Kitchen Thyme! Where can our readers find you?
Jacqueline: You can find me on my website and social media (below). If you have any questions or just want to say Hi, email me. I love hearing from my readers.
