Kitchen Thyme: Thank you for being part of our Kitchen Thyme Blogger Spotlight Series! Tell us where you’re from and how you got into blogging?
Andrea: I am from the Midwest, Northern Indiana to be exact. Blogging had always been on my mind ever since I started reading them 10 years ago. It was when my oldest two were close to going to college, that I knew I wanted something fulfilling to spend my time on, thus 3+ years ago, Living on Cloud Nine blog was born.
KT: How did you come up with the name of your blog?
Andrea: With the Last Name of Nine, I often find my life full of bliss and happiness, thus I am “Living On Cloud Nine,” a blog created for others to find their bliss as well.
KT: Where do you find inspiration to create new recipes?
Andrea: My parents are both great cooks so they are huge inspirations, as well as my husband & three boys. I will often ask them for new ideas, maybe it is just a recipe created around one ingredient they may name or a whole theme.
KT: What are your top 5 favorite recipes on your blog?
Andrea: Pineapple Pretzel Fluff Dessert, Texas Sheet Cake Cookies, Chicken Noodle Casserole, Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken w/ Fried Rice and my personal Favorite: Red Velvet White Chocolate Trifle.
Red Velvet White Chocolate Trifle
KT: What camera and lens do you usually use? Do you edit on Photo Shop or another Photo Editing site?
Andrea: I use a Canon Rebel T5 and or my IPhone 7plus and edit right on my iPad, no fancy photo editing sites.
KT: What advice would you give to new food bloggers when it comes to taking photos of food?
Andrea: Take LOTS of photos, sometimes you need a couple dozen just to get the best one, you can always delete all the ones you never used. Try placing your food items in different spots to capture the best possible spot.
KT: Do you have great lighting in your house for photos or do you need to use artificial lighting and filters?
Andrea: My lighting is fairly decent at various times but I am quite interested in investing in an artificial lighting kit as I heard it is a huge help.
KT: Are you a part-time or full-time blogger?
Andrea: I blog 4 days a week. I would say I put about 32 hours a week into the blog.
KT: Do you have a Virtual Assistant that helps you, and if so, what does that person do to help? What tasks do you like to do yourself and which ones do you prefer to outsource?
Andrea: Everything is done by myself or occasionally help form Mr. Nine.
KT: What does a typical week look like for you? Do you create recipes and blog posts on certain days of the week? What are some of your daily tasks or routines? Do you have a good blog/life balance? Do you unplug at night or on the weekends?
Andrea: I recently resigned from a Health Care Management position I held for 18 years so my time is much more flexible now. I like to create recipes either on Friday or the weekends so my whole family can enjoy and critique them, especially when my oldest two are home from college. As far as reading other blogs or creating written content, I save that primary for weekdays as to dedicate more time to the actual food creations and mainly; family time.
KT: How much time do you spend on Social Media each day?
Andrea: I would say about 3 hours but I am a huge proponent for putting the phone down and engaging with friends and family! I am not on Facebook but am considering Instagram. I just do not want Social media to monopolize my time.
KT: What tools/Apps help you to stay organized with your blogging business?
Andrea: My top two are Dropbox for organizing all my photos. Canva for creating great food graphic that are sized perfectly for Pinterest.
KT: Do you use any schedulers for Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram? If so, which ones do you use and how to you organize all of the scheduling?
Andrea: I have tried schedulers in the past but do not like them. It may take more time, but I prefer to do it on my own time and utilize a calendar for reminders.
KT: What are some Word Press plug-ins you find helpful?
Andrea: I am a Blogger Girl so this question doesn’t pertain to me.
KT: What are the main sources of income from your blog? Sponsored Posts? Advertisements? Affiliate Links?
Andrea: It used to be Sponsored Posts but now I do quite well with Affiliate links.
KT: Do you have a long relationship with any particular Brands?
Andrea: Amazon is the big one.
KT: Do you enjoy going to Blogging Conferences? If so, which ones do you recommend for Food Bloggers?
Andrea: I have not been to a conference; However, I have had a large blogger meet up and plan to do another one or two his year.
KT: Do you have any advice for someone starting a food blog?
Andrea: Know that each post will get better and better. Be patient and most of all engage with others in the blogging community. Comment, promote and ask advice as well as give it when needed.
KT: You are constantly working with food. What are a few ingredients you cannot live without?
Andrea: Olive Oil, Course Sea Salt and for baked goods: Brown Sugar!
